Fiction submissions should be no longer than 6,000 words. We can accept up to three flash fictions per submission. Writers should submit no more than one manuscript at a time, unless otherwise noted on our website. Due to an increase in submissions, we can no longer accept more than one submission per reading period unless requested by our editors. Simultaneous submissions are accepted as long as you notify us immediately should your piece be accepted elsewhere.
We do not accept novel excerpts.
Creative nonfiction submissions should be no longer than 8,000 words. Writers should submit no more than one manuscript at a time, unless otherwise noted on our website. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but please notify us immediately should your work be accepted elsewhere.
Send 3-5 poems per reading period–no more than 10 pages total, unless otherwise noted on our website. Submit only once per reading period, unless requested by our editors. Simultaneous submissions are accepted as long as you withdraw your piece immediately should it be accepted elsewhere.
Short story submissions should be previously unpublished and shorter than 8,000 words. You may enter as many stories as you wish. The entry fee is $15 per story and includes a one-year subscription to Harpur Palate.
All submissions will be considered for publication and all entrants will receive a copy of the issue in which the winning submission appears. Please be advised that we do not accept submissions from anyone affiliated with Binghamton University, past or present.
The annual winner receives a $500 prize, two contributor copies, and publication in the following issue of Harpur Palate.
Opens: February 1
Postmark Deadline: April 15
